Minutes From Being Put Down These Two Shelter Pups Hatched a Genius Plan

With only minutes to spare, these two shelter pups knew their time was up. Then, the two adorable doggos did something the shelter workers were nor prepared to deal with.

Would it be enough to save the lives of these precious animals?

Friends for life!

Friends are always there to put an arm around you and tell you it will all be okay. And we all know by now that when it comes to animals, they aren’t all that different.

Sadly, people who work in animal shelters are forced to euthanize healthy animal. You see, because of space restrictions, they have to harden their hearts against the fear and hopelessness in the eyes of the animals that trust them.

Shelter workers get a bad rap sometimes, but it is truly one of the hardest jobs imaginable. Every day, to have to decide whose time is up, and who gets to live for just one more day, hoping for a chance at life.

Shelter dogs

You go to a pen where the dog has always wagged their tail to greet you, and you find a cowering animal in a corner. They seem to know that their time is up and you are there to usher them to the next stage of life.

And none of them want to go.

Kala, an 11-month-old hound mix, and Keira, a 15-month-old boxer mix were waiting in their pen. It was time for the staff member to come and get them to take them to the euthanasia room.

The plan

Undoubtedly, the two dogs knew that something was different that day. So, what did the two animals do in their last moments?

Well, they reached out to one another and hugged it out just like a terrified human would have.

An adoption coordinator at the Etowah Valley Humane Society snapped the heartbreaking photo.\ of the shelter dogs embracing each other from behind bars, as they were facing their imminent deaths. Kala, tenderly wrapping her paws around Keira’s neck, as if comforting her bestie, and obviously terrified of being put down.

In a last-ditch effort to save the pups from being euthanized, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia, posted the heart-wrenching photo of them hugging in a Facebook post, along with a plea for help.

Will it work?

The narrative, written from Kala’s perspective, read: “I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.

If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry.”

Angels Among Us pleaded: “We really don’t have time to spare. We have no fosters available. Animals in need have overwhelmed us recently and we must have someone today apply to foster. They will do fine as long as they’re alive. You can donate, share and pray.”

Kala and Keira got a break that day in that dismal pen in that Georgia shelter. Truly, there were angels among them, and the angels made the sun come out for these two special girls.

Their picture went almost immediately viral and won hearts on social media around the world. In just two hours after the post, the group posted some wonderful news that Kala and Keira had been rescued from the kill shelter.

Not only did the dogs find a temporary foster home, dozens of people had donated money for their care and many also stepped forward to offer them a new forever home.

Exactly 2 hours and 6 minutes. That’s how long it took this amazing community of animals lovers to come together to save the lives of two canine friends,” Angels Among Us wrote.

For three months, the canines were fostered by a woman named Cris Folchitto, who agreed to take them in temporarily just so they wouldn’t be put down.

Finally,  Angels Among Us announced news of their adoption in another Facebook post.

“WE’RE ADOPTED!!! After looking everywhere for our new family, they found us!” wrote Angels Among Us as proxy for the girls.
As thrilled as we are that Kala and Kiera found their forever home, we can’t help but mourn for the animals that didn’t get lucky enough to have a charming photo taken of them. Animals that are just as deserving.
Please consider fostering for your local shelter. If you can’t foster, think about donating for the care of dogs so they can have a couple of extra days of hope.
A miracle happened for Kala and Kiera. YOU can be the miracle for someone else!
