When his owner, 79-year-old Mehmet Ilhan went into the hospital near his home near Bursa, Turkey everyone knew he would likely not be coming home again. Cesar couldn’t comprehend everything that was going on, but he knew that something was terribly wrong.
“Because of my father’s paralysis, they had a different kind of connection,” Mehmet’s son Ali told The Dodo. “When my father was in the hospital during his last days, Cesar stopped eating.”
Knowing his little dog was grieving for him, Mehmet’s last thoughts were for his best friend, Cesar. Mehmet’s son, Ali, promised his father that he would see to it that Cesar was taken care of for the rest of his life.
As feared, Mehmet’s life ended soon, and Cesar went to live with Ali. Knowing that Mehmet would want him to be part of the ceremony, Ali took Cesar with him to Mehmet’s funeral.
Cesar nobly led the procession on the way to the mosque. He broke the heart of everyone who attended as they watched him stop solemnly beneath the casket of his beloved. He sat there with head bowed, grieving along with everyone else during the entire ceremony.
After the interment at the cemetery, Ali took Cesar home. He thought Cesar was settling into his new home fairly well, although he knew that the little dog was still grieving his loss.
Not even death can part the best of friends. Little Cesar proves that every day
He noticed that Cesar would slip out of the house with him as he left for work every day, but he gave little thought to where Cesar might be going. One day he decided to follow him.
His eyes filled with tears as he followed Cesar’s footsteps on a familiar path to the cemetery. When he arrived, a cemetery worker greeted Cesar and when Ali greeted him as well, told Ali that Cesar visited with them every day.
“The people who work in the cemetery say the first thing he does in the morning is visit the grave of my father,” said Ali.
On that day, they paid their respects to Mehmet together.
Every day he continues to make the trip. Every day he sits by Mehmet’s grave. And every evening he is sitting by Ali’s door waiting to go inside when Ali returns home.
Ali says he does not know how long Cesar will keep up his pilgrimage. But Ali is firmly certain of one thing. Little Cesar may continue to grieve his loss, but he will never have to face the future alone.

If only each of us could have someone in our lives who loved us that much. Rest well, Mehmet. We wish you peace, little Cesar.
