Poor, Abused Bubba Never Stood a Chance — Until A Drug Bust Led To A Miracle

Sometimes, for one reason or another, people become addicted to drugs. Sadly, everyone around them usually ends up sufferring the consequences of this horrible disease as well — even their pets. Maybe especially their pets. Much like a little guy named Bubba we would like to tell you about today.

Very sad

We all know that hard drugs are a scourge on our communities. Drugs can kill not only the people who use them, but sometimes, accidentally, people who come into contact with them.

Drugs destroy lives and families and so much more.

Humans aren’t the only casualties in the drug war either.

One little chihuahua/terrier mix, found in a motel room during a drug bust in Tustin, California, is living proof of that. And very lucky to be living indeed.

Bubba

When police raided the hotel room where Bubba’s owner and another man were holed up, they seized the 5-month-old dog — along with a hoard of illegal drugs.

Officer Laurich from the Tustin Police Department thought Bubba seemed a little lethargic and “off” so while other officers dealt with arresting Bubba’s owner, he took Bubba to a vet.

It was lucky that he did so! A drug test showed that Bubba had heroin, nicotine, and meth in his system.

Drug bust

There was no way to know if it was from drugs Bubba has ingested, or if he had just inhaled the drugs in second-hand smoke.

This strikes me as pretty horrible,” Tustin police Lieutenant Robert Wright told CBS after Bubba’s rescue was first announced to the press. This is the first time we’ve ever heard of someone reporting that an animal has been under the influence.”

Police arrested Bubba’s owner Joshua West, 40, during the drug bust, along with another man. West was on parole for drug violations and a ‘large quantity of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia’ were found in the room, police said.

Animal cruelty

Besides all of the new drug charges, West was also charged with animal cruelty.

A post on the OC Animal Care website said that ‘another person or persons’ other than West were alleged to be responsible for the drugs in Bubba’s system. But, it occurred while Bubba was under West’s supervision, so was his responsibility. (We say throw the book at him, Danno!)

Office Laurich arranged for Bubba, strung out and near-death, to be taken to an Orange County Animal Care facility. It took Bubba a few months to detox and get the drugs out of his system so he could learn how to be a normal dog again.

Bubba adjusted to his temporary new home very well and quickly became one of the staff favorites, according to Assistant Director Katie Ingram. It was likely the first time in his life he’d been in a safe and happy environment. He began to thrive.

Officer Laurich visited Bubba while at the Care center and they enjoyed a round of play in the yard together. Officer Laurich smiled at the happy, smiling dog frisking around the grass and begging for belly rubs.

Quite a difference from the lethargic, wide-eyed stoned little dog he had rescued almost literally from the jaws of death. Bubba was now a typical little terrier, full of vim and vigor and a need to race and play.

Bubba looked very healthy and happy and both he and Officer Laurich seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time together,” the Tustin Police Department wrote on Facebook along with the video that’s posted below. Once he is fully recovered, he will be placed with a rescue organization who can find him a forever home that can provide the proper care he will need in the future.”

After watching the video of Bubba and the officer, veterinarian Matthew Wheaton at the Alicia Pet Care Center in Orange told CBS :

I would say looking at this video today, his prognosis is excellent. I think if he can avoid being exposed to additional drugs in the future with his new forever home, things will be perfectly fine,”

Once the drugs were all out of Bubba’s system and they could be absolutely sure that they hadn’t done any permanent damage, the care center began accepting applications for his adoption.

Furever home!

A wonderful family chose Bubba and promised that the rest of his life was going to be everything he deserved. And as a drug-free family, they promised he would never be exposed to illegal drugs again in his life!

A long way from being a drug dealer’s guinea pig, little Bubba has become a treasured member of a family that adores him. If only all endings could be so happy!
