Mother Nature can be cruel.
Yes, she inspires us with its beauty and feeds our soul. But we also know that behind every brightly painted fall leaf and with every puff of wind, Nature’s cruel food chain is hard at work.
Most of us have seen a video of one animal killing another.
And we know that as hard as it is to watch, it’s necessary for the chain of life to continue.
But one YouTube aficionado, Eryn06, wanted to show the other side of Nature. You know, the one where the lion will lie down beside a lamb and protect it through the night.
She does her best to make sure that any animal that comes into her yard always finds a good meal waiting.
One animal that makes an appearance every day is an old, battered raccoon.
Blind and missing his lower jaw, it’s a miracle he lived through whatever accident took his sight and his ability to eat normally.
It was amazing enough that the old guy learned to show up for his daily handout.
Then, after a short while, he began showing up accompanied by two very unlikely bodyguards.
Twin black kittens, staying one on each side of the old raccoon!
They would magically appear when he would come for food,” Eryn06 wrote.
So they figured out that Blind Raccoon = FOOD.
So they would appear when the Blind Raccoon (and sometimes other raccoons) would show up.”
There’s no way to know for sure if they stick close to him simply because he knows where to find the best foraging spots.
But one thing is for sure: long after the food is gone, they’re still there beside him!
He eats really well when he’s dining at Eryn06’s critter cafe.
“He often returns for seconds and sometimes comes back for thirds.
His bottom lip is missing so we feed him soft pasta noodles soaked in cream of chicken soup,” she wrote.
“We often cut up small pieces of hot dogs, ham, pork, etc.”
No wonder he keeps turning up and sniffing around to find the steaming food dish!
The old guy began showing up at Eryn06’s deck over five years ago.
For all those years, he has depended on her to give him the snack that carries him through the tough life on the streets. Or rather, on the floor of the forest.
No, it’s not lions and lambs, but animal experts say that a good relationship between cats and a raccoon might be just as bizarre.
What’s the oddest companionship you’ve ever seen in Nature?
