Woman Sees Garbage Bag In The Road, Stops, Opens It, And Gasps At What’s Looking Back At Her!

Trash on the side of the road is a common problem when you live in a rural area. No matter what part of the country you call home.

There’s a low class of people that think it’s ok to dump their garbage for someone else to have to pick up. Littering doesn’t always mean just tossing your drink cup out a window.

One Kentucky woman, driving back roads to try to save time on her way to work, noticed a garbage bag lying in the middle of the road. Malissa Sergent Lewis shook her head at the mentality of people who would do such a thing.

Then, the bag moved and her dismay turned into horror. She pulled over and approached the bag cautiously.

Lewis told The Dodo, “I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, ‘Did I just see that bag move?’ The closer I got, I realized it was moving. I could hardly wrap my mind around that. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out.”

Then she heard whimpers and realized someone had put a puppy in the bag and dumped it in the middle of the road where it would be terrorized, if not actually hit.

She tore into the bag and there was a beautiful little black and white face poking its head out. Panting for breath.

Not only was air at a premium in the bag, but in the sunshine, the black bag had captured a lot of heat.

The puppy didn’t seem to be too traumatized by its experience. “The bag was tied off in a knot, so I carefully tore a corner and looked inside,” she recalled. “It was a puppy. And he sure was glad to see me. As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail. He knew he was OK. I couldn’t believe it.

Though the puppy had a collar,  there was no tag, so she took him with her to an elementary school where she works. She hoped it wasn’t the owner who had done such a terrible thing. If it wasn’t she wanted to reunite them with their puppy.

I just put him in my lap and drove to school. I couldn’t just leave him in the car, so I brought him in with me. The principal saw me and said, ‘You have a dog!’ I said, ‘It’s a long story.’”

She called her son who came and took the puppy home. They later took the dog, now named Hefty, to the family veterinarian for a checkup.

We got him his shots. He seems happy and healthy,” she said.

Everyone who has met Hefty finds it hard to believe that anyone could do such a horrible thing** to such a sweet little guy. To any creature in fact.

As Lewis said, “Who could do something like that to any animal? I don’t care who you are; everybody loves puppies. It’s a real coldhearted person to put an animal, any animal, in a garbage bag and dump it on the road.”

At best, the dog would have just been traumatized hearing cars passing by so closely and not knowing which way to run. At worst, he could have been hit by any passing car he happened to stumble into even if they tried to avoid him.

It is a testament to his wonderful personality that he didn’t allow the experience to do permanent damage to his temperament. His new family loves him. Yes, Lewis decided to adopt him.

Lewis said, “We all love the puppy. He’s going to be loved, and have a good home with us.”

She thinks she was put in just the right place at the right time to save his life. It was meant to be. Little Hefty is pretty happy with the way things turned out.

We are too.

**As a note, although it was never discovered who had done this to Hefty, anyone who is caught doing this kind of thing will be liable to face felony charges now. The FBI recently stated that they intend to crack down on animal abusers.
