Student Asks Professor If She Can Bring Dog To Class, She Didn’t Expect His Surprising Response

When Hurricane Irma headed towards landfall, smart people got out of her way. Kind people helped each other ready their homes for evacuation and took care of their neighbors.

Responsible pet owners put the care of their pets forefront in their concerns. As it should be.

One college student made absolutely certain that her dog, Luna, would not be one of the helpless hundreds left behind to face the storm alone.

Jessica Lewis listened to the news that suggested evacuation for her college-town home of Statesboro, Georgia.

She called her family and told them she would be coming back to Atlanta to ride out the storm. She packed her bags, checked her schedule. And groaned.

She had one late class that was going to throw a monkey wrench into everything. If it was just her leaving town, alone, it wouldn’t be a problem.

She could attend class and then drive straight out from there. But, she had a responsibility that she took very seriously. Her dog, Luna.

If she had to leave class and return home to pick up Luna, it was going to put her in the middle of all of the evacuation traffic that was already beginning to fill the highways.

She gave it some thought, then penned the following letter:

Dr. Kennedy, my name is Jessica Lewis,” she wrote in a letter that’s since gone viral. “I’m in your TR Intro to Political Science class at 3:30 p.m.”

“I realize that the answer to this is probably no, but I thought that you might actually be a cool enough professor to say yes, and so I figured it was worth a shot.”

“Can I bring my dog to class today?”

“It would help me out SO much because your class is my last class of the day and I have to leave as soon as your class gets out to try to get home to Atlanta as soon as possible (trying my hardest to beat this storm traffic but your class is important to me so I don’t want to skip it) and it would prevent me from having to go all the way back to my apartment to get her before I can get on the road.

“I promise she’ll be good and only the teeniest bit disruptive 😊 I’ve attached several pictures of her below to help convince you with her cuteness. Thanks so much!!”

She received a reply that made both her and Luna smile.

So, both Jessica and Luna showed up for class. Luna was in fact only “the teeniest bit disruptive.”

She walked around the classroom, making friends and checking out Jessica’s classmates. The pair were able to evacuate immediately after class and made it safely to Atlanta before the storm hit.

“He loved having her and had no complaints at all,” Jessica told the Dodo. “He was wonderful about it”

Thanks, Dr. Kennedy, for being one of those rare professors that truly make a difference in a student’s life in an unexpected way.

Jessica didn’t have to call you “cool.” We can see that indeed you are! You rock.
