Professor Brings His Dog To Class, Students Stunned When They Realize Why

Every teacher faces the daunting task of keeping their class interested. Some classes entertain students a little better than others.

Some professors have fewer issues than others in keeping their class enthralled. But no matter the subject matter or how scintillating is the professor, everyone knows that evening classes are the worst.

Most students are usually there because they are working during the day and filling their curriculum however possible. By the time class time rolls around they are tired and weary and ready for relaxing. Not learning.

One professor at the University of Vermont came up with a somewhat unusual way to keep his students on their toes.

David Chapnick was expecting some hard work at the end of a long day when he walked into his 7 p.m. Consumer Law and Policy class. What he wasn’t expecting was to see a new student in the class.

The professor’s dog Maggie was seated at the front of the room.

Chapnick told The Dodo, “The first time Maggie came into class, everyone was fawning over her. She is a very calm and lovable dog. Personally, I felt that having her in class really instilled a brighter mood and atmosphere, which is very helpful in a course that first starts at 7 o’clock in the evening.”

It would be difficult to say who was happier about the events of the evening. The students, Maggie, or her dad the professor.

Maggie had been a rapt pupil for a while, then began to wander around the room a bit. She stopped for pats, to sniff at backpacks and to generally spread her charm. The students loved her.

Since she had been a big hit and had helped instead of hindered him in keeping the attention of the class, the professor began taking Maggie to classes pretty regularly.

When he left her at home a few times, the students were disappointed. And, Maggie wasn’t all that thrilled about it either.

Maggie got a special treat instead of a grade that semester. We’d be willing to bet that that professor’s class is one of the first to get filled for next time.

And, he owes it all to Maggie.
