Most of us have heard the story of the starfish. A man is walking down a beach strewn with starfish who had been washed ashore.
As he walks, he picks up one and throws it into the sea. Then another and then another. Someone asks him why he is doing this, pointing out that there is no way he can save all of the starfish.
The man stops, picks up another starfish and throws it back into the sea. “I saved that one,” he said.
The story of the starfish illustrates how one person can make a difference. One kind word or deed for another can change them in ways you cannot imagine.
It’s not just humans who can make a difference in others’ lives. Our lovable pets can make a difference, too.
Lana is a happy puppy who found her forever home. She was rescued from the streets of Brazil when she was still a puppy.
Like many rescued animals, Lana is grateful to have the loving home she does. And now she’s giving back.
Lana’s owner gave her a new, thicker blanket to keep her warm in her dog house as colder nights arrived.
Her person tucked her in and went to bed only to be shocked at what she found in the morning.
During the night, Lana had seen a stray dog walking nearby. She didn’t bark at him or scare him off.
Instead, she appeared to have invited him over. Lana dragged her new blanket out to the fence and the two dogs shared the warmth of the blanket that night.
“I thought, ‘How beautiful what she did for her friend.’ My best four-legged friend reminded me of something so important: generosity!” said Lana’s owner Suelen Schaumloeffel.
Lana continues to make a difference in the life of this stray dog. He still comes by, but he won’t stay long.
Lana’s person leaves food and water for him, but the poor stray still won’t let her get close to him.
In time, the stray pup will hopefully let Schaumloeffel close so she can help him find a forever home. In the meantime, at least he still has Lana.
