Some dogs are easily adopted. These are the ones that are the cutest, the sweetest and the most outgoing.
But other dogs have a much harder time finding their forever homes.
Some have been abused or neglected. Some are just naturally more shy or skittish. The outlook for some of these poor dogs can be disheartening.
Luckily that was not the case for Kailey, a shepherd mix whose fate was all but certain death.
She was skittish, leading many to believe that she had experienced a lot of fear in her life before coming to the shelter.
She was described as timid and she would even snap at people if they tried to pet her. This type of behavior leads some dogs to be tragically declared unadoptable.
But Kailey’s foster parents saw hope in Kailey where others did not. That’s when they found Suzy.
“The story of what she had been through and it just pulled on our heartstrings, we just thought we would be the perfect people for her,” said Suzy. “It was a perfect match.”
What happened next proves that puppy karma is real!
Kailey was happily accepted into Suzy’s home, but she remained timid and fearful. Then one morning, her strange behavior alerted her new family.
“All of a sudden she just started barking and looking at us and growling, like trying to get our attention and I said, ‘Well, what’s the matter with her,’” said Suzy. Kailey led Suzy outside.
“She pulled me directly over to the side yard,” Suzy said. “Right away I smelled overpowering gas and a loud whooshing sound.” After calling 911, the fire department quickly arrived and did indeed find a gas leak.
“I just don’t take chances on people’s lives like this,” Suzy said. “It is a dangerous situation.”
No one in the neighborhood doubts that Kailey, the timid, fearful dog that no one wanted, likely saved lives that night.
“She is our hero dog because we do not know what the outcome could have been,” Suzy concluded.
