Sergeant Jason Legleiter and Police Officer Wade Hammond received a shoplifting call, a call they get often.
When they arrived, the staff rushed them to a nearby truck instead. That’s when they knew. there was a bigger problem than shoplifting!
When they reached the passenger side of the pickup truck, they saw the pup hanging by its leash, appearing lifeless.
The dog had jumped from the truck window and hung himself. The officers were taking no chances that the pup was gone and sprang into action.
“The dog was hanging motionless and appeared to be deceased. Sergeant Legleiter was quick to think on his feet and used his patrol duty knife to cut the dog down in an instant.” explained the police department from body camera images.
Officer Hammond then fell to his knees and pulled the leash from the dog’s neck, and then started pressing on the dog’s side. Miraculously, the dog started taking a few breaths.
“The dog became more and more responsive and showed signs of life little by little.”
Before long, the pup was breathing more normally and even tried to stand. He then looked up with grateful eyes at the officers, and they offered him a few sips of water, which he gratefully accepted.
“There is absolutely no doubt that Sergeant Legleiter’s and Officer Hammond’s quick response and care saved this dog’s life,” the department wrote on their Facebook page.
They also stated that they have an open investigation to determine whether charges should be filed against the owner.
